Gas Prices Soar

Submitted by jesse on Mon, 2007-03-12 11:14.

There is an increasing rate in gas prices across the country and even across the world. It has been making it hard for people to get where they are trying to go, raising feuds and frustration in America.

Gas prices aren’t necessarily high all over the country, it varies from state to state and what the state government says they want the gas prices to be. Typically they are high over the whole country. According to How Stuff Works (link below), Hurricane Katrina was one of the main reasons why gas prices went up in 2005. "Price increases occur when world crude-oil market tightens and lowers inventories," according to How Stuff Works.  This is called supply and demand.

Scribble Jam

Submitted by JesusH on Mon, 2007-03-12 11:11.

Scribble Jam: According to Scribble magazine is the biggest hip hop event in the world, and to some people is a long anticipated three day event that is held annually every August 9-12 in Cincinnati, Ohio, by its founder, DJ Mr. Dibbs.  This event consist of the five elements of hip hop.  These are: turntablism, break dancing, beat boxing, graffiti writing and freestyling. Each one of the elements is then competed in for a grand prize of $10,000.

Each one of the battles is organized a little differently than the other, for instance the DJ battles are usually prerehearsed and the skills that are examined are mostly the complexity of their scratching and beat juggling, while the MC freestyle battles are just that, freestyle no rehearsals just the test to see who has the most bashing rhymes and punch lines against their opponents within two rounds in thirty second intervals.

Depo-Provera

Submitted by andreag on Thu, 2007-03-08 12:38.

Depo-Provera is a popularly used birth control method, possibly because of it's advantages and accuracy. There are also many downfalls though.

Depo prevents pregnancy by stopping ovulation. That way there is no egg for sperm to fertilize. Your body naturally builds a uterine lining to prepare for pregnancy, and then releases it when not pregnant (a period). There is generally no lining, or very little when on Depo. So, no lining or egg to be released.

The biggest known advantage is it's 99.7% accurate at preventing pregnancy. According to Wikipedia, there is no worry of detection or forgetting it because it is injected every three months. Usually after the second shot; no periods occur, and there is minimal drug interactions. This shot also decreases the risk of many things including: endometrial cancer by 80%, PID, functional ovarian cysts, uterine fibrosis, ovulation pain, iron deficiency anemia, and seizures.

PDA; I want to hold your hand

Submitted by Maddy on Fri, 2007-02-16 11:46.

PDA's in schools, although not permitted, are a complicated issue, leading to confusion between two OCHS administrators.

PDA's, or pubic displays of affection, are a variety of behaviors that express affection. Hugs, kisses, hand holding, and lap sitting are just some of the many types of PDA's. All PDA's are banned at school, but OCHS administrators disagree on the finer points of what counts and why.

Alan Stroh said,"It's really hard to give an exact definition of PDA. There are so many gray areas when it comes to this stuff, and everyone interprets things differently. What Bobby Joe and Suzy Q think are appropriate, may not be ok with Johnny and Mary. It just depends on the circumstances and the people involved as to what happens next, or the actions that the school must take from there."

Nano wires on our minds

Submitted by JesusH on Wed, 2007-02-14 12:40.

OCHS staff and students have become curious and concerned due to an upcoming technology known as nano wiring that can possibly take place within the next twenty years. Nano wiring is a future effort to insert tiny bundles of nano wiring thinner than the lines on a piece of paper into the blood vessels of our brains and then use them to sense nerve impulses of neurons right beside these blood vessels. This new interaction between ourselves and the world around us will create many possibilities.
According to 22nd Century, a new PBS show, these wires could “stimulate the senses directly - creating visual perceptions, auditory perceptions, movements, and feelings. Deep brain stimulation could create the ultimate virtual reality.  Not to mention, direct communication between man and machine or human brain to human brain could become a real possibility.”

Pit bulls

Submitted by andreag on Wed, 2007-02-14 12:18.

The American Pit Bull Terrier (APBT) was originally bred in the British Isles for bull baiting. According to information from Bad Rap, a California pit bull advocacy group, bull baiting was pit bulls "rounding" up bulls for an audience's entertainment. This became illegal in 1835, and that's when the idea of dog fighting began. The idea was to breed them specifically to be aggressive towards other animals, but nice to humans. This was so the humans wouldn't get bit when pulling the dogs off of each other.

District Bans ICP

Submitted by jesse on Tue, 2007-02-13 12:20.
In many schools there have been bans and restrictions on certain colors, revealing outfits, and certain gang related memorabilia, these bans were for a good reason and are to keep order in the schools. In the past year there has been a new dress code in the St. Vrain Valley School District that states that students can’t wear articles of clothing that have the logo or insignia of ICP; ICP is a rap duo that has a reputation of violence and committing crimes. ICP is said, admittedly by its own members in a Rolling Stone article, to be one of the most hated rap groups and lately is becoming a problem in schools and outside of schools in certain parts of the United States.

“This has been an ongoing problem,” said Paul Francisco, assistant principal from Olde Columbine High School.  He stated that there have been many reports of gang activity and incidents involving tagging of the logo ICP. He stated that it wasn’t the fact that they were offended or had anything personal against them; the ban was handed down to the school from the district. The fact that these groups have been established as a gang and are affiliated as a gang in the law’s eyes is why the ban is in effect. The ban is followed at many schools, the approximate number is 9 high schools in the district; it is also banned at many other school nationwide. There have been reports of people using ICP as an insignia for their gang and baseing their crimes and life around the rap group and what they represent.  This isn’t necessarily ICP’s fault; it’s the people who are using their style and music lyrics as a way of life.

Take it to the Track

Submitted by chrissy on Tue, 2007-02-13 12:17.

Teenagers today are obsessed with the way their cars look, sound, and run. They want their cars to be the “fliest,” says Ari S., an OCHS sophomore. They want their car’s stereo system to go boom. The thing is that that’s not the problem.

Street racing is the problem. Street racing is when you go and race your cars illegally. According to Tony S., the president of the Career Development Center’s race team, Triple Threat Racing, “Street racing is immature, irresponsible, and flat out stupid.”  If you have the “need for speed,” said Ed Day, an automotive teacher at CDC, take it to the track.

Longmont Local Band: Sollicitus

Submitted by Berserker on Wed, 2007-01-10 12:33.

Sollicitus: one of the greats…well not yet but in a few years you never know. In this Longmont based band, when you have an inseparable four piece with in your face bass, (Jimmy) crushing guitar riffs, (Tyler) and a variety of vocal styles (Luke) and a drummer that’s a machine (Kean). You know that the metal scene is not dead. I took some time out of there busy schedules to ask them some questions on being a local band.

Zakk Wylde

Submitted by Berserker on Wed, 2007-01-10 12:22.

Bud keeps asking me what’s so important about Zakk Wylde and pretty much challenged me to write a biography on him so I will accept his challenge and write one and also I will write why he’s so important to me.

So I guess it starts here, when Zakk was 13 he started playing piano. He gave it up shortly afterwards because all he wanted to do was learn Elton John songs and Neal Young stuff. According to Wylde in his DVD, Boozed, Bruised, & Broken-Boned, he was playing football at the time and he wanted to be a linebacker but he wasn’t big enough (imagine that).  Wylde and his mom were at his coaches house one day and his mom noticed a guitar in the living room, and she asked if he plays and he said “no my son Leroy does” and then Leroy came out with a beer in his hand and a Harley Davidson hat on and just started jamin’. Later on, Leroy became Wylde’s guitar teacher.
