Underage Drinking a Reality for Teens

Submitted by claudia on Tue, 2007-01-09 12:26.

Throughout the U.S. underage drinking is huge. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention did research on underage drinking throughout high schools in 2003. They found that one out of two high school students drink some alcohol, one out of four binge drink one out of four had their first alcoholic drink before thirteen and one out of three ride with a driver who had been binge drinking. Binge drinking is defined as having three or more drinks in a row for women. For men it’s having four or more drinks in a row. Looking at these stats it goes to show that about half of the U.S drink or have drank.

Polar Bear Plunge

Submitted by Tymothy on Mon, 2007-01-08 12:28.

On the first of January of 2007, the Boulder, CO Polar Bear Club put on the 24th Annual Polar Bear Plunge. The turn out was tremendous with over four hundred people, according to the club,  who came for one thing: to strip down to their swimsuits, to jump in toan ice-covered lake and feel the chill and refreshing water embrace them.

I was there and I believe it’s a great way to start off a new year. The experience of the rush that you feel from the icy waters of winter is unmatched. It’s like snatching life from the jaws of death. I do it for the feeling of satisfaction I get when it’s all said and done. To know that I do something that separates me from so many others is very satisfying, too.

Amendment 44 fails..42 Passes -- Two Issues that Matter to Teens

Submitted by dweedle on Thu, 2006-11-16 12:34.

44 fails

Under Colorado's Amendment 44, adults ages 21 and older would have been allowed to possess and use up to an ounce of marijuana without facing a $100 fine. But voters said no way.

44 did not pass with a tally of  819,579 votes, or 59.50 percent saying no. 557,758 people supported the amendment (40.50 percent).

Most teens I asked support the amendment; when asked on his opinions on marijuana legalization in Colorado, Ari  S. responded saying, “Legalization of marijuana would lower alcohol related death in the state, along with providing the government with resources to cut down on the drugs that actually do damage. The cops would be relieved on taking down young kids just for smoking weed.”

Bouldering?

Submitted by Tymothy on Tue, 2006-11-14 12:28.

For all you non-bouldering folk out there, bouldering is the art of climbing boulders. The sport is done with no equipment or ropes but also is a safe distance from the ground. Because you are close to the ground, no serious injuries follow. One of the benefits of not having gear to mess with is that you can go virtually anywhere you want. This is because that in sport climbing you must stay beneath your anchor.

Bouldering is also a more high impact sport that is more focused on individual moves instead of the endurances that you must have for trad, or traditional, climbing.

Intimate Relationships

Submitted by Jazmine on Mon, 2006-11-13 12:01.

There are many different kinds of relationships; there are close friend relationships, love relationships, relationships with your family, along with many more. Specifically, I’m talking about an intimate relationship meaning a relationship involving not only physical but emotional intimacy. Many people of different ages may experience a relationship like this and may have different opinions of what makes it a good relationship.
Danna T., a sophomore at OCHS has been in a relationship with her boyfriend for almost three years. I interviewed Danna asking her, “What does it take to have a good intimate relationship?” She replied, “It takes a strong trust foundation to have a good intimate relationship. It also takes things like sharing the same interests so that you can both do what you want and both of you will enjoy it.”
I then interviewed Pam Long a student services secretary at OCHS. I asked her, “What does it take to have a good intimate relationship?” She then said, “Trust and communication play a huge part in an intimate relationship. Generally caring and loving the person is also important. Also balance as in when you’re in an intimate relationship you don’t spend all your time with your intimate one and you have other relationships. I also asked Pam Long, “What is the most important thing in an intimate relationship?”
She said, “The number one thing is communication, you can talk to your intimate one and you can tell each other pretty much anything but maybe not everything. Also if you can communicate you can articulate a problem the two of you have and come to a solution that you both agree on.”
