Advisory offers good, bad changes

Submitted by melissa on Thu, 2006-09-07 11:31.

A new mandatory course at OCHS is causing some controversy and excitement.  Advisory is a fifty minute class where students meet up with an assigned teacher and it’s an hour where we silently read for 15 minutes, write for 10 minutes, and then end it with talking about school related things. The class meets four days a week, unlike the old advisory which met for one.  It’s our first class everyday and some students are complaining about it, while others are going with it.

The St.Vrain Valley Future Farmers of America students kept busy with summer competitions and shows.  The Boulder County Fair hosted FFA students for a showing competition and stock show for the animals that they raised at the Career Development Center farm.

“There were at least 12 or 13 competitors from our district and each did really well,” said Anna K. who is a senior at Niwot High School and the FFA’s reporter.

In Governance over the next few weeks, we'll be discussing, debating, and possibly approving several changes to our school handbook.  Paul discussed these changes in Governance yesterday.  A copy of the revisions is attached to this post; if you're a member of our community, please take the time to read and think about these.  Feel free to post comments and questions to the changes here.

Last quarter, Mr. Evil Eyes completed a final project for my Shakespeare class that was too good to keep to myself.  Here, for your viewing pleasure, is his abridged version of Othello -- shot entirely in the World of Warcraft.  Enjoy.

Altering the Akelei

Submitted by Mr. Evil Eyes on Mon, 2006-05-22 11:19.

Fiction by the author.  Want to see more?  Let him know in the comments.

It’s 5:00 in the morning. There is no sound but that of the air vents regulating the temperature in this den. The mismatched eyes stare at a control that does not move, because it does not want to. Then a high pitched shout fills the room, followed closely by two more. Control is awake, and watching the questioning mismatched eyes. The room is still. Sliding the door open, Control allows the mismatched eyes to burst forth into the darkness. But still there is one final lock before complete freedom. As Control reaches for the opening mechanism, the mismatched eyes grow impatient and lash out at the object, scarring it with its claws. Then the door opens and Akelei is released into the world of men. No one is ready for this but it had to happen, otherwise the basement would be overrun with a foul, overwhelming stench. That is how the Akelei works. Basic needs, basic commands communicated to Control. If Akelei fails to alert Control and goes on without consent, Akelei will be controlled. In a crate. Thus the days are spent in constant repetition, all for the goal of Akelei’s independence. Control fears this day will never come. Like exponential decay, it will never reach zero. But Control’s patience is another equation, much less complex. This relationship between a controller and a pair of mismatched eyes is not a parasitic one as first glance might have you believe. Studies indicate that this is really a symbiosis, each giving the other something in return for something. Clearly the Akelei will receive sustenance and a safe lair, but what Control gains is still a mystery to science. A common theory is that Control gains some measure of happiness from this, but that theory only seems to work in some situations. Most scientists just choose to believe that the two beings were thrust upon each other and must now make the most of it. Adaptation at its finest. One by one the lights dim and are extinguished, casting the room in shadows. Control slides the door closed after calling Akelei inside. The mismatched eyes do not wish to stay in here in the dark, but give up just like every night before. Akelei gives up and seeks her position of vigilance near the entrance.

Diversity Posters

Submitted by angie on Mon, 2006-05-22 11:14.

We want to make OCHS as strong as we can and one way we can do that is the diversity posters in the hallway. When you have a minute with nothing to do, go over and put a check mark next to something our community needs to work on. We want your input you are a member of this school. So when you have a free minute go over and make a check mark on the diversity posters.

GSA

Next school year, Jennifer, our interventionist, and a few other students are hoping to start up a gay straight alliance for the school. This is a group that usually meets once a week to discuss ways to make students feel even safer at school. This group is for anyone interested in having a good time and also be willing to talk about sexual orientation openly. We are hoping to get a big turn out for this group so please think about coming and being a part of a good thing for the school. Even if it's just for support we would love to see you be a part of the group.

Good-bye

Submitted by seth on Mon, 2006-05-22 11:03.

It is time now for seniors to graduate, tosay goodbye to underclassmen and all our teachers that helped us better our minds. The friends that we made in school will forever stain our thoughts with fond memories of youth. Thoughts of Bonita smiling every day when coming to school, Bud and his gift to make students lighten up, and Donna and her give it your all attitude. All of the teachers at OCHS are awesome and they care about the needs of every student. I am a student that has directly been affected by the wonderful people at OCHS. OCHS is a one of a kind school because they make every person feel a part.
