Need I say more? Censorship and Your Rights Online
Submitted by Rance on Fri, 2006-01-06 13:15. Censorship is “the suppression of information, ideas, or artistic expression by anyone, whether government officials, church authorities, private pressure groups, or speakers, writers, and artists themselves,” according to the Academic American Encyclopedia. In reference to the Internet, censorship is very prevalent via Internet-filtering programs, such as 8e6 Technologies, Bess SmartFilter, and CyberPatrol. Generally speaking, censorship exists to protect the population from illicit or inappropriate content. In schools and libraries censors are used to ensure that students/employees are staying on task and being productive, however, it turns out that a large majority of the time Internet-filters are far more destructive to productivity than they are constructive due to the limitations of what is able to be viewed online. For example, a study on school Internet filters conducted by the Electronic Frontier Foundation found that: “Of all the pages related to state-mandated curriculums blocked by blocking products, the products blocked only 1-3% of those web pages to CIPA’s criteria for blocking visual depictions of illegal obscenity, child pornography or harmful to minors content.” “…97-99% of the web pages blocked using non-standard, discretionary, and potentially illegal criteria beyond what is required by the CIPA.” (EFF Net Block Report)
Return the Camera
Submitted by Aracely on Fri, 2006-01-06 11:21. Olde Columbine High School is so good to the students, the principal and teachers trust us and are very kind and its sad how some people don’t appreciate that. Somebody has taken a camera from the computer lab. “I used it on Wednesday afternoon (December 14) for picture taking,” Jean Summey, art teacher and yearbook adviser. She was the last person who used the camera. By Monday morning Angie Johnson, business teacher, was looking for it, but the camera and an additional battery pack were gone. Also missing were two memory cards for the camera. Teachers and students had come to the conclusion that between Wednesday afternoon after Summey used it till Friday; somebody took all of those items.

Submitted by Aracely on Fri, 2005-12-09 12:17. Bonita has a big plan for her granddaughter’s birthday, Madison Noel, who is going to be nine years old. Tonight Madison, her family, and nine other girls are going to the grand opening of The Chronicles of Narnia in Denver. Bonita’s son made T-shirts for the nine girls with a picture from the movie. On December 20th they are going to see the lights around the Capitol Building and go eat afterwards. I’m sure they are going to have a great time.Happy birthday, Madison.

Poinsettia Sale
Submitted by melissa on Mon, 2005-12-05 11:37. Over at CDC’s greenhouse students enrolled in the Horticulture Program are growing and caring poinsettias to sell them to raise money for their classes. It is an annual Christmas theme that has been offered for years here at CDC. In fact the Horticulture Program has been growing poinsettias to earn money for 35 years, according to Angie Hebert, the teacher of the program. They offer six different varieties of poinsettias in 3 different sizes, all sold with foil and bows.
